Biography

Edd Alvah Ruggles (1880-1940) worked for the Cleveland Museum of Art for 25 years, serving as museum photographer and master printer. Ruggles took many of the early photographs of the museum and its collections and was viewed as an expert in museum photography.

In 1931 he published “Small Stone Houses of the Cotswold District,” which was illustrated with his photographs. The book is in the Ingalls Library and the photographs are in the Museum Archives. In the introduction Ruggles writes that “The selection of photographs for this book was made with a view to the adaptability of the buildings pictured for use in the United States” going on to note that “It would seem that almost any design built with Cotswold textures might be appealing.” The rest of the introduction reads like a tour book with advice for traveling through Cotswold country such as “It will be well to start for Malmsbury… so as to arrive just before sundown, as the view of the town approached from the north at that time of day is very impressive.”

An artist in his own right, E.A. Ruggles had 51 pieces accepted to the May Show, an annual juried exhibition of local artists held at the Cleveland Museum of Art from 1919-1993, and won first prize awards for his photography in 1920 and 1923.
