Scope and Contents note

One century box and one oversized folder of photographs of portraits painted by Rolf Stoll. Arranged by age and gender of sitter: adult male, adult female, male child, female child, group and non-portrait paintings. Thereafter arranged by name of sitter with unidentified and unannotated portraits at the end of each section. The collection also contains two polaroids of Rolf Stoll and his wife Maria.

Biographical/Historical note

Rolf Stoll was born in Heidelberg, Germany in 1892. He studied at the art academies of Karlsruhe, Stuttgart, and Munich before coming to the United States in 1912. Stoll came to Cleveland in 1923 and taught at the John Huntington Polytechnic Institute and the Cleveland School of Art, now the Cleveland Institute of Art. His artworks included landscapes, murals, and watercolors, but he was prominently a portrait painter. Celebrated for his portraits, he painted many distinguished Clevelanders and taught portrait painting at the school of art. Between 1925 and 1954, Stoll had 126 artworks accepted to the Cleveland Museum of Art's May Show and won numerous awards. After retiring in in 1957, he and his wife Maria moved to Florida. He passed away in 1978.
