Scope and Contents

From the Collection:

Joe Kisvardai was born in the Cleveland area and graduated from Fairview Park high school. He served in the Marines from 1964 to 1968 during the Vietnam War. When he returned home, Kisvardai started a painting and repair business. By the 80's, Joe was working for artists Berenice Kent and Edris Eckhardt and from there he eventually developed friendships with many Cleveland School Artists. In exchange for his work, he received art pieces, which laid the groundwork for this expansive collection. It was also around this time that Joe met his wife Elaine. Elaine also attended Fairview Park high school and went on to work as a librarian and art teacher.

Joe and Elaine spent 40 years collecting materials related to local Cleveland artists that now serve as an important resource in the Museum Archives. This collection features items from renowned local artists including Edris Eckhardt, Frank Wilcox, Viktor Schreckengost, and many more. In addition to individuals, there are materials from groups such as the Cleveland Artists Foundation, The Kokoon Arts Club, and the Cleveland School of Art. At about 40 cubic feet, this collection provides significant historical insight into the art community of Cleveland.
