Biography

Born January 3, 1934 in Dallas, TX, Henry Hawley (1934-2019) earned his bachelor’s degree from Stanford University in 1955. In 1958 he earned a master’s degree from Harvard University. He received an additional master’s degree from the University of Delaware in 1960 after two years as a Winterthur Fellow (1958-1960). After graduation he went on to work at the Cleveland Museum of Art where he served in positions of increasing responsibility for over 42 years.

July 5, 1960: hired as the museum’s first curator of decorative arts

1969: curator of later decorative arts

1979: chief curator of later Western art

1995: curator of later decorative arts and sculpture

1996: curator of baroque and later decorative arts and sculpture

2001-2002: interim curatorial chair

December 31, 2002: retirement

Mr. Hawley organized exhibitions such as Bugatti (1999), Faberge in America (1997), and Comfortably Seated (1986). During his long career he published over 70 works including Neo-Classicism: Style and Motif (1964), Faberge and His Contemporaries (1967), and catalogs for Bugatti and Glass.

A member of the Decorative Arts Society, Hawley received the Robert G. Smith Award in 1978 and served as the organization’s vice president from 1974-1976. He was also executive editor of Cleveland Studies in the History of Art beginning in 1994 and was adjunct professor at Case Western Reserve University starting in 1967.

He died on Thursday, August 8, 2019 at his home in Chagrin Falls, Ohio.

Scope and Contents note

This small collection consists of audio cassette recordings and transcripts of oral history interviews with museum employees and others associated with the museum. Most of the oral histories were conducted by the museum archivist specifically for the oral history program. Interviews conducted by other museum employees are noted in the box list.
